Description

ARISTOTELES. Aristotelis de republica libri VIII interprete & enarratore Io. Genesio Sepulveda Cordubensi. Paris: Michel Vascosan, 1548

The text is in the translation of Juán Ginés de Sepúlveda and it is one of numerous editions of Aristotle texts and commentaries printed by Vascosan at this time.

Marcus Fugger had many books bound in Paris in this same style; see lot 1062 for a larger format volume with the same corner fleurons and spine decoration, on a Paris 1550 imprint. This sale contains numerous bindings in varying styles made for Marcus Fugger, some of which also contain the same SA monogram.

4to (230 x 160 mm). Roman and italic type, 30-35 lines plus headline. collation: A4 a-z4 A-Z4 AA-TT4: 264 leaves (last leaf blank). Woodcut initials. (Occasional light damp-staining.)

binding: Contemporary Parisian calf gilt (237 x 173 mm), two frames composed of blind fillets with gilt corner fleurons, small gilt leafy centrepiece, spine with small gilt stamps in compartments, title lettered in second compartment, plain edges. (Binding slightly soiled and scraped, substantial repairs to spine.)
