Isidor Kaufmann was celebrated for meticulously rendered synagogue interiors and dignified portraits of rabbis and Talmudic scholars. In this arresting portrait, the Rabbi is posed before a multi-colored Torah curtain, which is embroidered with boldly drawn stylized flowers and leaves, and a dedicatory text in Hebrew. This unusual curtain appears in other portraits of young Rabbis, including Portrait of a Young Rabbi, c. 1897 (sold at Sotheby's, New York, 17 December 2013, lot 61) and Young Rabbi from N... (Tate Gallery, London). There is a strikingly similar version of this composition accounted for in the 1925 portfolio of works by the artist published by Verlag Manz (no. 7), titled Der Fanatiker.
