With Daniel Hunt Fine Art, London;

From whom acquired by the present collectors, 2017.

Francis Towne, a prolific watercolorist, produced this large-scale oil early in his career. Towne often depicted the rolling hills of South West England, including Exeter, where he spent most of his career. Influenced by Richard Wilson and Thomas Gainsborough, Towne, who began his career as a coach-painter, here depicts a family traveling throughout North Cornwall by horse and buggy. The background illustrates the junction of the River Camel and Padstow Bay.
