Georg Heinrich Hergenröder specialized in genre and landscape painting. In addition to sweeping landscapes such as the present, in which figures fill the foreground with a townscape beyond, Hergenröder also regularly produced grotto paintings. Born in Darmstadt in 1736, the German artist spent most of his career in Offenbach, a town on the River Main that borders Frankfurt.
