Filippo Falciatore

This mature work by the Neapolitan painter Filippo Falciatore typifies the elegant style and nuanced color palette for which he was celebrated. The work combines a rococo sensibility with baroque flourishes, thereby dramatizing the religious scene. Professor Nicola Spinosa, to whom we are grateful for his assistance cataloguing this lot, has connected the present painting with Falciatore's 1768 treatment of the subject, executed as an altarpiece for the Church of San Giovanni Lionello in Trani.
