Pietro da Cortona executed landscapes, a rare genre for the artist, only very early in his career. Likely dating from the mid-1620s, the present work bears strong similarities with the artist's frescoes executed between 1626 and 1629 for the Villa Sacchetti-Chici, Castel Fusano, and two small oval paintings at the Capitoline Museum, Rome (inv. nos. 168, 172), similarly dating from between 1623 and 1625.
