The passage inscribed on this brush pot is Shengzhu de qianchen song written by Wang Bao, praising the Emperor who can rely on excellent ministers. The seal in underglaze red reads Xi chao chuan gu ('antique to be handed down from our glorious dynasty'). During the Kangxi period, brush pots with prose poems inscribed in underglaze blue and underglaze-red seals became very popular, probably reflecting the Emperor’s keen interest in China’s literati tradition. Similar brush pots are also known inscribed with Su Dongpo’s Second Ode to the Red Cliff. As Teresa Canepa and Katharine Butler suggest, it was not until the mid-Kangxi period that the characteristic concave unglazed base with a small glazed circular recess at the centre appeared. (Leaping the Dragon Gate, London, 2021, p. 437)

A brush pot with the same inscription and seal is in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Geng Baochang ed., Qinghua youli hong: Gugong bowuyuan cang wenwu zhenpin daxi, xia/ Blue and White Porcelain with Underglazed Red (III), Shanghai, 2000, pl. 189; another was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 2nd October 2018, lot 141.
