These seats are close to the chairs made for the grand cabinet of Queen Caroline Murat at the Palazzo Reale in Naples, depicted in a watercolor by Élie Honoré Montagny dated 1811, today preserved at the Palazzo Reale in Caserta (inv. IMPRC 1905, nn. 354-365). Our examples, executed in mahogany and adorned with gilt-bronze mounts at the center of the openwork back, differ from the originals, gilt and white-lacquered, by a more restrained execution that reflects the circulation of French models throughout Europe under Napoleon.
