Henry Graves Jr. commissioned Patek Philippe to create what became the world’s most complicated watch, a title it held for 56 years following its delivery in 1933. Conceived during a rivalry with James Ward Packard, the Supercomplication cost CHF 60,000 and required eight years to complete.
Delivered on 19 January 1933, the Patek Philippe Henry Graves Supercomplication is a pocket watch comprising 24 complications, including a celestial chart depicting the night sky above Graves’s Manhattan residence at 834 Fifth Avenue. In 2014, the Supercomplication established a world auction record when it sold at Sotheby’s Geneva for approximately CHF 24 million.
The horological legacy of Henry Graves Jr. was continued by his grandson, Reginald “Pete” Fullerton Jr., an important collector in his own right. His collection included the present Patek Philippe reference 5004, a perpetual calendar split‑seconds chronograph wristwatch, which was sold by Sotheby’s in 2012 as part of the landmark Graves–Fullerton family collection.
Reference 5004 was introduced in 1994 and produced until 2009. It built on the legacy of the perpetual calendar 3970, inheriting the layout while adding a split-seconds chronograph. Powered by the Lemania-based calibre CHR 27-70 Q, the movement was finished to Geneva Seal standards, observable through the sapphire crystal display back. It is estimated that just over 1,000 examples were made, with around 300 in platinum. The present example is very well preserved and retains all original accessories.
