From whom acquired by the present owner in 2010.

Born on 7 December 1756 in Tilburg, Cornelis van Spaendonck received his initial artistic training in Antwerp under Guillaume-Jacques Herreyns (1743–1827), before moving to Paris in 1773 to study and work with his older brother, the celebrated floral painter Gérard van Spaendonck (1746–1822). Both Cornelis and his brother adopted French versions of their names and most of their paintings are signed accordingly, as seen in this work.

In Paris, Spaendonck immersed himself in the city's vibrant art scene, joining the prestigious Académie des Beaux Arts and the Sèvres porcelain factory as a flower painter, eventually becoming its director from 1785 until 1800. Exhibiting regularly at the Paris Salons, he soon gained recognition for his exquisite and vibrant flower paintings of which this elegant still life on marble is a fine example.
