Another version of this composition, by Jan Brueghel the Younger and Frans Francken the Younger, is now in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden (inv. 915); for this painting, a collaboration with Jan Brueghel the Elder has even been suggested by K. Ertz (see Bibliography, p. 1005). He attributes the arrangement of flowers and the landscape in the medallion to Jan Brueghel the Younger, and the figures of the Holy Family and St John to Frans Francken. Collaboration between the two artists, both living in Antwerp, was not unusual.

The present composition reprises the same motif of a floral wreath surrounding the same medallion with an image of the Holy Family. The flowers are arranged in almost exactly the same way, even to the extent of the fly that appears in the bottom left.

In his critical catalogue of the work of Jan Brueghel the Elder, K. Ertz lists the present painting as the best replica of the Dresden work (op. cit., p. 1010), and therefore a version executed by the workshops of Jan Brueghel the Younger and Frans Francken the Younger. He was able to examine it in 1985, after a restoration that revealed the Holy Family in the medallion – they had previously been covered by a landscape.

Une autre version de cette composition, par Jan Brueghel le Jeune et Frans Francken le Jeune, est aujourd'hui conservée au Staatliche Kunstsammlungen à Dresde (inv. 915) ; pour ce tableau, une collaboration avec Jan Brueghel l’Ancien a même été suggérée par K. Ertz (voir Bibliographie, p. 1005). Il attribue à Jan Brueghel le Jeune l’agencement des fleurs et le paysage dans le médaillon, et à Frans Francken le Jeune les figures de la Sainte Famille et de saint Jean. La collaboration entre les deux artistes, vivant tous deux à Anvers, n’est pas rare.

La présente composition reprend le même motif de couronne florale, entourant le même médaillon dans lequel est représentée la Sainte Famille. Les fleurs sont presque exactement agencées de la même façon, allant même jusqu’à reprendre la mouche en bas à gauche.

Dans son catalogue critique de l’œuvre de Jan Brueghel l’Ancien, K. Ertz répertorie notre tableau comme étant la meilleure réplique de l’œuvre de Dresde (op. cit., p. 1010), et donc une version réalisée par les ateliers de Jan Brueghel le Jeune et Frans Francken le Jeune. Il avait pu l’examiner en 1985, après une restauration ayant permis de révéler la Sainte Famille dans le médaillon, autrefois recouverte d’un paysage.
