Description

A fine gomai-yokohagi style tosei gusoku [armour]

The helmet signed Yoshiyuki

Edo period, 19th century  

 

Kabuto [helmet]:

the sixty-two plate russet iron bowl with raised ridges, terminating in a five-stage shakudo and gilt tehen kanamono of stylised chrysanthemum form, the peak inset with stencilled Dutch leather, the turnbacks applied with shakudo and gilt tomoe mon on further stencilled Dutch leather, shakudo fukurin, the black lacquered three-tiered solid plate neck guard of ko-manju [small and rounded] form, with close-spaced lacing in dark blue dyed doeskin, the maedate of half spherical form applied overall in wild boar hair

 

Mempo [face mask]:

the russet iron face mask forged without wrinkles, open mouth and detachable nose-plate, silver teeth, yak hair moustache, gold and black lacquer to the underside, black lacquer interior, black lacquer throat protector comprised of a single tier in three-pieces hinged at two sides

 

Do [cuirass]:

the two lame black lacquered iron cuirass of gomai yokohagi style [five sections of horizontal plates] with laced areas at both top and bottom, detachable hinged gyoyo [protection for should strap fastenings] and green agemaki bow to the reverse, shakudo mountings, seven tassets of four-tiered black lacquer kusazuri, all components with matched doe skin lacing

 

Sode, kote [shoulder guards and sleeves]:

fine russet iron oda-gote with bold hyotan gane on the forearm and rectaungular plates with applied cherry blossom on the upper arm, the tekko with further tomoe mon, black lacquered solid plate chu-sode

 

Haidate, sune-ate [thigh protectors and shin guards]:

russet iron ikada haidate, shino sune-ate


Accessories:

Two armour boxes emblazoned with mitsu-domoe mon, of later date

Yoshiyuki would seem to be an unrecorded smith. The ironwork throughout the armour is of very high standard and stylistically points to Kaga as a likely place of manufacture.
