Description

A kawazutsumi dangae-do tosei-gusoku [armour]

Edo period, 18th – 19th century

 

Kabuto [helmet]:

the sixteen-plate russet iron helmet with seated rivets in koshozan form, five-stage copper-gilt and shakudo tehen kanamono, the peak lined in lacquered leather and applied with copper-gilt and shakudo with a dragon among clouds, ththe turnbacks applied in shibuichi with myoga mon [ginger crests], black lacquered rounded close-fitted neck guard (itamono ko-manju jikoro), the lower plate applied in shobugawa, with unusual 'six-by-four-by-six method of spaced lacing in blue braid, the elaborate copper-gilt forecrest (madedate) in the form of twisted strips

 

Mempo [face mask]:

the black lacquered iron mempo forged with pronounced chin, detachable nose-plate, yak hair moustache, red lacquer interior, four-tiered black lacquer throat protector, the lower tier applied in shobugawa and laced in matching braid

 

Do [cuirass]:

the iron cuirass applied in black lacquered grained leather and hinged in two pieces, the centre with a copper-gilt tiger, the fur details well-rendered, the other plates in shobugawa and laced in matching braid and applied with further myoga mon, seven tassets of five-tiered kusazuri

 

Sode, kote [shoulder guards and sleeves]:

black lacquered solid plate ko-sode laced in matching braid, black lacquered iron hand guards (shino-gote)

 

Haidate, sune-ate [thigh protectors and shin guards]:

black lacquered kawara-haidate, silk brocade lining, black lacquered shino-suneate with yellow 'Dutch' cloth kikko
