The tradition of decorating rooms in Britain with fashionable 'Chinoiserie' papers is a long one. Wallpapers like the present lot, appear from the 18th century onwards. Flowers and birds being amongst the most favoured subjects. Importers in the first part of 20th century, when there was large revival in this type of decoration included figures like Sir Charles Allom (1865–1947) and inspired leading decorators like Sybil Colefax (1874–1950) and John Flowler (1906–1977) and Syrie Maugham (1879-1955).
