AN ENGLISH 'PONTREMOLI' NEEDLEWORK RUG, LONDON


circa 1930

worked in wool and some silk, in tent stitch, in gros-point with details in petit-point, workshop of Jacques Mereno Pontremoli (1886-1952), the originally very pale blue ground (now cream shades), worked with an open overall design of a profusion of naturalistic and stylised flowers, including carnations, lilies, tulips, lilac, bluebells and sunflowers, with the design extending into the border, and incorporating a small petit-point butterfly within the main field, with silk worked initials, JMP on edge of corner
