According to Ovid's Metamorphoses, Antiope, a great beauty, was seduced by Jupiter disguised as a satyr. From this union twins were born: Amphion and Zethos. Afraid of her father's ire, Antiope fled her home, was forced to leave her sons and was imprisoned. The twins later avenged their mother by killing her captors but Dionysos refused to let those murders go unpunished and made Antiope mad until she was cured by Phocos who wed her.
