rectangular with cut corners, the lid painted en plein with Terpsichore playing her harp and a listener by an altar against a black enamel ground with brown trees, within white and gold geometrical borders and flanked by painted butterflies, moths, cicadas and other insects in shades of brown enamel imitating wood marquetry, central white enamel roundels with a gold flowerhead, the sides and base similarly decorated, the centre of the base painted with a swan with lion legs, framed by further insects, apparently unmarked
