These dishes formed part of a dinner service including forty-eight dinner plates, six serving dishes and four second course dishes by Sprimont with additional pieces by John Denzilow, Robert Jones and Parker & Wakelin. The latter date from 1780-1781 and the Sprimont pieces were presumably engraved with armorials at this time when the whole dinner service was supplied. A larger matching pair of oval serving dishes is in the Gilbert Collection, see T Schroder, The Gilbert Collection of Gold and Silver, no 70, p. 272.

The original owner of the service could have been Richard Jervoise (1704-1762) of Herriard Hall, Hampshire. He inherited a significant amount of land and property in 1743 (the same date as the service) on the death of his father Thomas, MP for several constituencies between 1691 and 1710. Richard was the father of Tristam Hudleston Jervoise and George Hudleston Jervoise Purrefoy Jervoice, and the family features in the painting by Mason Chamberlin, circa 1755, whereabouts unknown.
