Lot Details

Description

the leather body of rectangular form with folding cover and two compartments, the front one with its own flap, the outer body covered in velvet and embroidered with silver thread with stylised floral design, the hemlines sewn with silver, yellow and blue threads

11.7 by 19cm.

Two letter wallets dated to the seventeenth century and covered in similar crimson velvet are in the Sadberk Hanim Museum (inv. no.SHM 1867-I.1705) and the Omer M. Koc Collection (see Bilgi 2022, cat. no.3&4, pp.54-59). Another seventeenth century wallet from the latter collection presents the same distinctive curved flap profile as the present example, a design which persisted into the eighteenth century.

The decoration of this wallet also relates to that of a seventeenth century Ottoman saddle in the Badisches Landesmuseum Kalsruhe (inv. no.D151, published in E. Petrasch, Die Karlsruher Türkenbeute, Munchen, 1991, pp.126-8).
