Description
A Sèvres (Hard-Paste) Porcelain Écuelle, Cover and Stand (Écuelle Boizot et plateau), circa 1786
richly decorated with arabesque scrolls, cornucopia of flowers, and incense burners flanked by entwined snakes, within gilt-strap borders reserving roses and further flowers, the écuelle affixed with two low wide loop angular handles, the ball knop of the cover surrounded by a band of painted acanthus leaves reserved on a dark mauve-maroon ground, interlaced LL marks in gilding enclosing date letters jj for 1786, the stand with painter's mark LB in gilding for Jean-Nicolas Le Bel, le jeune, later père (active at Sèvres between 1766-93), the écuelle with indistinct incised mark Bc(?)

The form takes its name from Louis-Simon Boizot (1743-1809), director of the sculpture workshop at the Sèvres porcelain manufactory from 1773 to 1800. Several design drawings preserved in the archives of the Musée national de la Céramique, Sèvres, are signed and dated respectively Ecuelle nouvelle forme de M. Boizot, 1ere gr[andeur], fait le 9 mai 1785 et refait en 1787 le mois d'avril and Ecuelle nouvelle forme de M. Boizot donné à faire le 9 mai 1785.
