The form is first recorded in a drawing, probably by Claude-Charles Gérard, inscribed Coupe à bouillon et sa soucoupe à deux anses à moulures, ['Bouillon cup and saucer with two moulded handles'] and dated to Year XI (February-March 1803). The designation coupe à bouillon hémisphérique appears only later, first occurring on a drawing by Charles-Éloi Asselin dated 1804 (Sèvres, Cité de la Céramique, inv. 2011.3.2105, ill. 1). See T. Préaud, The Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory: Alexandre Brongniart and the Triumph of Art and Industry, 1800-1847, New Haven and London, 1997, p. 175, cat. no. 10.
