Barbarigo, Giovanni Francesco

Numismata virorum illustrium ex Barbadica gente. Padua: Seminary Press, Giovanni Manfré, 1732

large folio (560 x 380mm.), engraved frontispiece, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, elaborate engraved initials, head- and tailpieces (all by Robert van Audenaerde of Ghent), contemporary marbled calf, gilt edges, modern slipcase, WITH A PRINTED FLYER dating from 1760 advertising the work, priced 12 Venetian gold ducats, loosely inserted, a few small repairs to title-page, joints repaired

An elaborate and luxurious publication celebrating the patrician Barbarigo family of Venice. The family included numerous doges in its lineage, as well as various cardinals, including Gregorio Barbarigo, bishop of Padua who established the Seminary printing press, Marcantonio Barbarigo, bishop of Corfu then of Montefiascone, and the author, who was bishop of Verona then of Padua.

The printed flyer (text in Latin) is on an uncut folio sheet (430 x 308mm.) and has the direction "Per il H.H. Marcello" in manuscript on the verso (the sheet shows signs of having been folded for posting). A supplement to the work was issued in 1760 but it was not included in this copy.
