PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT EUROPEAN COLLECTION
TWO TIMURID CUT TILE MOSAIC SPANDRELS AND A SQUARE TILE, CENTRAL ASIA OR PERSIA, 14TH/15TH CENTURY
comprising two triangular polychrome fritware spandrels in white, shades of blue, turquoise, ochre and green, with a stylised floral design, the square tile also composed of polychrome fritware, set in wooden frames

Ex-collection Mnavzagan Pridonoff (d.1937), Tiblisi and Paris.
These tiles are named in the inventory of the previous owner’s mother on her wedding contract dated 28 July 1944 (first work to be itemised).
Rediscovered by the previous owner in his mother’s home, France, 1973.
It is most likely that these tiles were created under Timurid patronage (1389-1501). Known for their extensive architectural projects, the Timurids were responsible for building many religious institutions. It is difficult to say for which monument these tiles would originally have been intended since so many have been destroyed by earthquake and other natural as well as man-made disasters, but it is possible that they were part of a mosque or madrasa.
