The inscription reads: "The Gift of Her Majesty Queen Victoria to Victor Buckley, her godson, 1838."
Victor Buckley was the first child to receive the honour of being godson to Queen Victoria after her accession. He was born on April 28, 1838 and died June 10, 1882, son of General Edward Percy Buckley and Queen Victoria's lady in waiting Catherine Buckley (Pleydell-Bouverie). General Buckley was equerry to Queen Victoria for over 20 years.
