An extensive wooded landscape with figures, a castle, and a river in the distance
oil on canvas
canvas: 52 ⅓ by 100 ½ in.; 133 by 255.3 cm.
framed: 60 ¾ by 108 ½ in.; 154.3 by 275.6 cm.
A leading landscapist of the Brussels school, Jacques d'Arthois was known for his lush and detailed depictions of the Forêt de Soignes on the southeast edge of Brussels, where he owned a home. This impressive, large-scale landscape is likely an image from that area. The present painting displays many characteristics seen in d'Arthois' best works: the framing of both vertical margins with tall, bushy trees, the path carved out of the clay bank, and the traditional Flemish framework of browns in the foreground.
