The nef was an elaborate table ornament in the shape of a ship that was used to hold cutlery, spices, or napkins during the Renaissance period. They were made in silver or gold and often embellished with enamel and jewels. With the Renaissance revival in the 19th century, the form was made popular again into the 20th century. While they were made in a range of sizes, this is the largest example recorded.
