realistically carved as a seated hippopotamus in richly colored nephrite, seated with raised head and fitted as a cigar lighter with gold pipes and silver-gilt lighter fluid compartment, the eyes set with diamonds, apparently unmarked, traces of scratched inventory number (140)70

Acquired from the London Branch of Fabergé by Miss (Keyser) Larnach for £98 and 10s (cost price 501 rubles), presumably a joint purchase by Agnes Keyser and Captain James Larnach as a gift for King Edward VII on 6 November 1908;

Returned by Queen Alexandra following the death of King Edward VII, as a souvenir of the King;
