PUFENDORF, SAMUEL
Histoire du regne de Charles Gustave roy de Suede comprise en sept commentaires. Nuremberg: Knorz for Christopher Riegel, 1697
7 books bound in 2 volumes, folio (354 x 225mm.), half-title, engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, additional engraved title-page, engraved armorial on title-page, engraved portrait of Charles XI, engraved initials, head- and tailpieces, engraved illustrations, 10 single-page engraved plates, 115 double-page engraved plates (some also folding), contemporary calf, red edges, lower corner of A1 repaired, occasional light browning, bindings slightly scraped
Pufendorf's magisterial history of the reign of King Carl Gustav (ruled 1654-1660), written while he was historiographer royal, was first published in Latin in 1696.
Most of Carl Gustav's reign involved the Second Northern War in Poland-Lithuania, which forms the bulk of Pufendorf's narrative, together with the numerous plates, town views and maps of the territory under question. Towards the end is a very long folding plate depicting Carl Gustav's funeral procession in Stockholm.
