Not much is known about the firm Gustave Escalle & Cie. With establishments in Lyon, Grenoble, Geneva, London and Birmingham, the firm carved marbles from France, Italy and Belgium to produce decorative objects such as the present lot as well as furnishings such as columns, fireplaces, stairs and baths. According to an advertisement published in a newspapers dated from 1898, they were also patented providers for the Dutch Court and H.M. Queen of England.
