The present sculpture belongs to a rare subtype of gilt-bronze figures of Guanyin made around the Kangxi period. The overall aesthetic relates to contemporaneous wire-inlaid bronze figures signed Shisou, but the present type differs from the 'Shisou' group in that it is ornamented with gilding rather than wire inlay, and does not bear maker's marks. A closely related example sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29th May 2018, lot 3132, whereby the face, hair, and treatment of the drapery bear a strong resemblance to the present figure. A smaller, slightly less refined gilt-bronze figure of the deity with turquoise beads inset into the jewelry, sold at Christie's London, 16th May 2013, lot 1493.
