Description
Attributed to François Boucher
Paris 1703 - 1770 Paris
A young woman in elegant attire, standing, holding flowers in her hands
Red, black, blue and white chalk
340 by 213 mm
Mr. Casimir Ignace Stralem,
by inheritance to his wife, Mrs. Casimir Stralem
Two similar drawings, depicting a 'Flower girl' were on the art market in 1975, one from the collection of Thomas Dimsdale.1 These studies illustrate the figure in much the same stance, hands outstretched and holding flowers, however, in both, she is standing in a landscape in contrast to the present sheet.
We are most grateful to Alastair Laing, who, having seen the drawing in the original, is of the opinion that while the face is very typical of the artist, certain ambiguous elements in other passages of the drawing suggest it should be catalogued as 'Attributed to François Boucher'.
