A fine gold pocket chronometer with moon phases 

Circa 1840, no. 873


Movement: gilded ½ plate, Louis Berthoud-type pivoted detent chronometer escapement, bi-metallic compensation balance with three large keystone weights, the weights secured with a gold screw and with a platinum nut and adjustment screw to either side, blued steel helical spring, ruby endstone, fusee and chain with maintaining power, female winding sleeve, bearing the signature Breguet

Dial: silver engine-turned, satin finished chapter ring with black Roman numerals, similarly finished outer minute ring, blued steel hands, the minute hand with open square to the base for setting, subsidiary seconds with contrasting engine-turned finish, large aperture for ages and phases of the moon at 12 o'clock

Case: 18ct gold, engine-turned back, the bezels and band further engine-turned, recessed pusher beneath bezel at 2 o'clock for adjusting moon phases, detachable polished gold cuvette signed Breguet and with milled borders, gold pendant and bow, case back signed and numbered B 873 and with case maker's mark J P with a star between within a lozenge-shaped cartouche, French hallmarks to back and pendant
