The present set of small triangular tiles were manufactured for the original floor of the The Piccolomini Library in Siena. The tiles are decorated with vibrant yellow crescent moons on a dark blue ground and bordered by a white and red cable pattern, called treccia federiciana.
The floor in the library was replaced in the 19th century. The original tiles have been dispersed and collected by both private and public collections, including the British Museum, London (inv. no. 1878,1001.2).
