This painting compares closely with Petrini's Portrait of a philosopher and Portrait of a mathematician, in private collections in Lugano and Varese respectively.1 Here the energetic brushwork, most obviously in the figure's hair and beard, is comparable also to that in Petrini's Philosopher Reading, today in the National Gallery of Slovenia, Ljubljana.2
