FIRST EDITION, folio (449 x 343mm.), gold printed dedication leaf to Otto the Bavarian King of Greece, tinted lithographed pictorial title and 39 plates by J.B. Kuhn after Peter von Hess, titled in German, French, English and Greek, contemporary green calf gilt presentation binding (see provenance) by Mechi and Bazin Makers of London, metal clasps, green cloth slipcase, new endpapers, dedication with minor marginal repairs, occasional marginal spotting, lacking second title and leaf of descriptive letterpress, rebacked retaining original spine, minor staining and fading to upper cover


A RARE ALBUM OF GREEK HEROISM. One of the most celebrated collections of illustrations relating to the events of the Greek War of Independence.

Peter von Hess (1792-1871) was a German painter, known for his work of the Greek War of Independence. Otto of Greece was accompanied by Hess in 1833 to the newly formed Kingdom of Greece. Here Hess gathered material for painting showing the war.
