After France's defeat at Sedan against Prussia on the 2 of September 1870, Napoleon III was taken prisoner. This event led to the proclamation of the Third Republic by Léon Gambetta on the 4 of September. The Empress Eugenie was forced to flee from the crowds at the gates of the Louvre. She escaped discreetly through the colonnade of the Louvre and then in a simple carriage. It is this romantic episode, which has caused much ink to flow, that our drawing describes. After knocking on many doors, the Empress took refuge with Thomas W. Evans, an American dentist living in Paris, who helped her escape to England.

Après la défaite de la France à Sedan contre la Prusse le 2 septembre 1870, Napoléon III est fait prisonnier. Cet événement entraîne la proclamation de la III^e République par Léon Gambetta le 4 septembre. L’Impératrice Eugénie est contrainte de fuir la foule qui menace aux portes du Louvre. Elle s’échappe discrètement par la colonnade du Louvre puis en simple fiacre. C’est cet épisode romanesque qui a fait couler beaucoup d’encre que décrit notre dessin. Après avoir frappé à de nombreuses portes, l’Impératrice se réfugie chez Thomas W. Evans, dentiste américain installé à Paris, qui l’aide à fuir en Angleterre.
