L'usage rituel de substances hallucinogènes était un pratique important de l'ancienne culture andine. Les exemples les mieux connus d’un tel usage sont associés à la région méridionale aride bordant le désert d'Atacama au Chili. Les substances hallucinogènes, notamment les feuilles de plantes, les graines et les résines, étaient préparées sur de petites tablettes à priser en bois portables. Ils présentaient un plateau central incurvé et à l'extrémité du manche étaient finement sculptée des figures d’animaux ou de personnages. Cette tablette présente un animal assis qui était incrusté de pierre ou de coquillage.

The ceremonial use of hallucinogenic substances was an important aspect of ancient Andean culture. The best examples are associated with the arid southern region bordering the Atacama desert of Chile. Hallucinogenic substances including plant leaves, seeds and resins were processed on small portable wood snuff tablets, carved with a recessed central tray and the handle end finely carved with animals or figures. This tablet features a seated animal which was further embellished with stone or shell in the recessed areas of the prone body.
