The 1970 illustrated novel by Jack Finney was critically well received upon its release and has since become a benchmark of science fiction and a classic romantic time travel narrative. Taking place in the present and 1882, the backdrop is Manhattan, particularly the neighborhoods largely unchanged since the late 19th century, making it a perfect candidate for a film adaptation.

Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and John Foreman were the first to acquire the rights and had interest from Warner Brothers to make a film with John Huston directing. The Newmans and Foreman went so far as to have Finney scout locations that were suitable for Victorian New York. The present location book was compiled and painstakingly annotated by Finney with original photographs of where to find blocks the most unchanged in over a century (Gramercy Park, parts of the Lower East Side, Cooper Union to name a few). The project fizzled when the studio lost interest, and Robert Redford (introduced to the book by the Newmans) eventually took on the task, also ultimately to no avail, though he tried three times over a 20 year period.

As a novel with a large cult following, many of the locations herein are now part of the Time and Again waking tours for fans. Though not its original intent, this also provides an interesting visual record the city streets in the 1970s.
