A Norwegian carved birch tankard, late 18th/early 19th century


the flat domed lid with relief carved decoration including a crowned lion, the thumbpiece in the form of a recumbent lion, the plain drum raised upon conforming feet

21.5cm. high, 20cm. wide; 8 ½in., 8in.

Sections of birch trunk worked to form lidded tankards are usually particular to Norway, and the same form is often seen in silver. For another birch tankard, possibly by the same hand, see that sold Sotheby's, Olympia, 18 November 2003, lot 272.
