The vanitas motif of the skull against a dark background is inspired by works such as Champaigne's painting currently at the Musée de Tesse in Le Mans.¹ Depicting the same skull from two angles is an unusual technique that may have been intended as a reference to head studies done from life, though here the implication is much more somber.
