This is a 20th century copy after the arresting portrait by Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) of a Bashi-Bazouk, a mercenary soldier belonging to the skirmishing or irregular troops of the Ottoman Empire, currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York.1 The present work was executed by artist an author Jamie Manrique-Palacin. Originally from the province of Burgos in Spain, he attended the Byam Shaw School of Art and was invited to represent Spain at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on the occasion of 'Spanish Week’ in 1995.
