The right-facing lion in the mark, the lack of a "Gorham Mfg Co." stamp, and the lack of a date letter or Sterling mark allow these pieces to be dated to the middle of the Civil War, shortly after Mary Todd Lincoln acquired a Gorham tea and coffee service and a three-piece breakfast service. Despite the War, the Gorham firm posted new highs in sales figures each consecutive year for 1863, 1864, and 1865 (Charles Carpenter, Gorham Silver, 1831-1981, p. 62).
