An archaistic celadon jade baluster vase and cover

Qing dynasty, 19th century

清十九世紀 青玉雕仿古饕餮紋蓋瓶


of flattened form and rectangular section, rising from a stepped foot to gently rounded shoulders, an angular flared neck and a galleried rim, the broad sides carved in low relief with archaistic taotie and confronting stylized animals divided into three zones by a vertical and a horizontal band of keyfret, the neck carved with a further pair of confronting animals, the narrow sides left plain to show the softly polished pale green stone, the angular chamfered cover similarly carved with confronting animals and surmounted by a trapezoidal finial, wood stand (3)

Gifted to the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, in 1963 (acc. no. 63.6.54).
