Daniel Marchand (1733-1794), native of Hanau and brother-in-law of Les Frères Toussaint, was also founder of one of the leading firms producing bijouterie in 18th century Hanau. He was a prominent member of the goldsmiths' association founded in 1764 and also a signatory of the 1773 agreement signed with the engine-turner Etienne Flamant. He was contracted to supply 70 boxes a year to Flamant for turning and it is more than probable that the present box was one of these, although the agreement failed in the end as they were unable to supply the number of boxes required. According to Lorenz Seelig, Marchand's firm went bankrupt before 1790.
