The Property of a Gentleman

YEATS, WILLIAM BUTLER

The Wild Swans at Coole. London: Macmillan and Co., 1919

8vo (5 x 7 1/2 in.; 128 x 195 mm). Half-title. Blue cloth covered boards, cover and spine lettered and decoratively stamped in gilt after design by T. Sturge Moore, small newspaper cutting referring to Yeats pasted to front fee endpaper; very minor rubbing to corners and head and tail of spine. In custom blue and cream linen cloth covered clamshell case.

First edition, one of 1500 copies printed, Siegfried Sassoon's copy

The present Macmillan edition, published two years after the Cuala Press edition (see previous lot), featured seventeen additional poems, but was issued without "At the Hawk's Well."

Siegfried Sassoon, one of the greatest of the World War One poets, knew Yeats, having, like him, frequented the home of Lady Ottoline Morrell in London in the 1920s.
