Description
FOURNIER, EDOUARD, AND [EUGENE CHAPUS]
Le Jeu de Paume son histoire et sa description. Paris: Didier, 1862
4to (10 3/4 x 8 3/8 in.; 273 x 212 mm). Half-title and title printed in red and black, 14 albumen prints mounted on grey card and numbered as 16 plates; inner margin of title adhered to frontispiece, ink stain to verso of frontispiece, minor fingersoiling to title, some tissue guards loose or torn. Original full red cloth, front cover gilt-lettered with gilt crossed rackets and balls motif, spine, gilt lettered, yellow coated endpapers; extremities worn, some soiling and staining to covers, upper third of spine perished.
The first tennis book after Lukin, and the first to use photographic plates
As Noel and Clark note: "nothing more valuable as a contribution to the history of tennis in early times has ever been written" (pp. 289-291).
