TENNYSON, ALFRED, LORD
[Timbuctoo, A Poem]. Prolusiones Academiæ Præmiis Annuis Dignatæ... [Cambridge: John Smith, 1829
8vo (5 3/8 x 8 1/2 in.; 136 x 214 mm). Series title-page, five section titles. Original gray paper wrappers; wear to spine. In custom gray-blue folding chemise.
Tennyson's first separately-published work
In 1829, Tennyson was awarded the Chancellor's Gold Medal at Cambridge, were he was a student at Trinity College, for one of his first pieces, "Timbuktoo." Apparently the future poet laureate was too shy to read the piece aloud in the Senate House, as was the custom for the winner, and asked ask Charles Merivale to take his place.
PROVENANCE
Howard Lehhman Goodhart (booklabel to chemise)
