Poems and Ballads was the first collection of Swinburne's poems. The collection was met with near instant success, and with equal controversy as it explored anti-theism, lesbianism, sado-masochism, and many other potentially contentious themes. Swinburne is regarded as one of the most accomplished poets of the Victorian era, and the present volume represents him most important collection of verse.
