The kabuto and mempo signed Neo Masanobusaku (made by Neo Masanobu)
Edo period, 17th century
the sixty-two plate iron bowl with small standing rivets, decorated to the central, frontal plates in gold pigment with a hi no maru [sun disc], terminating in a five-stage copper-gilt tehen kanamono of typical chrysanthemum form, the russet iron mabisashi [peak] applied with kanji inscription, the stenciled Dutch leather fukigaeshi [turnbacks] applied with nadeshiko mon [fringed pink crests], iron fukurin [ornamental border], four-tiered black lacquer shikoro [neck guard] with sugake odoshi [spaced lacing] in blue braid, the russet iron resseimempo [face mask with fierced expression] forged with deep wrinkles, flared nostrils and open mouth, detachable nose plate, broad yak bristle moustache, gilded teeth, four-tiered black lacquer yodaregake [throat protector], each plate carved with stylised cloud scrolls
