The Rolex reference 16520 'Zenith' Daytona was in production from 1988 until 2000. It was Rolex's first automatic chronograph, the first to be housed in the new legendary 40 mm case, and featured a heavily modified Zenith El Primero movement, hence the moniker. Over the 12 years of its lifetime, the Zenith Daytona underwent a few changes including five versions or 'marks' of the dial. The last transformation included the introduction of the luminova in 1998, and a new bracelet design. This present watch, made in 1997, as the serial number suggests, has a Mark IV dial which was the last dial to have tritium luminous markers. Reference 16520 have long been of keen interest to collectors, especially because it represents both the new and old era of the Cosmograph Daytona lineage as it was the first automatic movement they ever made, and was the last outsourced movement to be featured in a Rolex case.
